Jung on turmoil and sociopaths

F: 12:20 p.. I’m ready for more, I think, if you are.

CGJ: Then let us address the underpinnings of your concerns. The underpinnings, because what you think concerns you is phenomenal – superficial – next to the read, substantial, underlying causes.

The problem is not Donald Trump. It is not that so many people see in him desirable traits in a leader. It is not any of the things it appears to be. The problem is that people cannot live forever with lies. Sooner or later, they have to break free or at least make the effort to break free, because if you live in lies you lose the very footing beneath you. Who do you think, among all those citizens, does not have a connection to a non-3D self? Who do you think is all evil, or all ignorant, or all mean-spirited, or all—anything? It is a prime mistake to dismiss people’s knowings, even when they don’t know what they know or how they know it. Even when the ways their knowings express are mistaken, the knowings are not.

F: I think you are saying, opinions are one thing, emotional basis is another.

CGJ: You know very well that anyone, stressed significantly, moves from his preferred mode of apprehending reality to the inferior part of the opposing mode. A thinker becomes dominated by his lowest emotions. A feeler becomes prey to his most collective clichéd opinions. This is not a liberal v. conservative thing, much less a Democratic v. Republican thing. It is not enlightened v. undeveloped, open-hearted v. skinflint, accepting v. bigoted. The factor to concentrate on is stress.

You know I made a study of what drew people to the Nazis.

F: I didn’t know that specifically.

CGJ: One could hardly avoid it; it was in the air, until anyone who wished to understand and heal the psyche had to ask, what is it that is driving so many people to escape their personal responsibility by giving themselves to a collective? And although I confine myself to the Nazis, it ought to go without saying that it applies to the communists as well. Indeed, more so, in that communism preceded the Nazis and outlived them, and put the world in peril of its life.

But there too you see that finally the collectivist society fell apart of its own weight. It tried to sustain itself by promising material satisfaction and social justice. It gained many years by being able to portray itself as under siege, first by international capitalism, then by the Nazis, then by the Americans and their allies. It is possible that if it had made its experiment in more benign surroundings, in more supportive times, it would have collapsed much sooner or, more likely, would have been forced to shed certain unobtainable ideals in order to save ideals that could in fact be achieved. No one can provide absolute equality even if it were desirable, but with intent and resources one can assure that no one starves, or grows up ignorant for lack of opportunities. You see?

F: I think so. Pie in the sky can actually get in the way of providing real pie here and now.

CGJ: All right, that is the material element. But giving people something to believe in is something else. “Without vision, the people perish.” Man cannot live on bread alone. This is very true. People cannot live without ideals.

What drew people to join the Nazis was a combination of many elements, one of which was economic desperation; another, a sense of having been dispossessed; another, an outrage that the older ideals, Fatherland, Kaiser, frugality, discipline – spiritual participation in the culture, call it – were all under attack, which meant that those who had remained to true to these ideals were themselves under attack. Given that there existed a clear opposition – not only the Communists (though they were the most organized, the most dangerous), but all the formerly repressed elements that flourished in the Weimar Republic and seemed to traditional eyes to be scum – militancy seemed necessary and not only justified but – how to put it? – so justified that not participating in militant outrage seemed inexcusable.

F: Sorry, but that will have to do for the moment.

CGJ: Any time. It won’t be hard to find the place.

F: 1:20. All right.

CGJ: Perhaps you can see – woe to them who cannot see – that in times of great social dislocation, no set of values, no set of individuals, no parties, no ideologies, are innocent. The Social Democrats, the Communists, the Monarchists – everybody – was as responsible for the rise of the Nazis as everybody else, at least to the extent that they either profited from or assented to the changes disrupting German society. It is all well and good to stand watching and be appalled by the growth of the Nazis as expressed in marches along streets and speeches in mass events. That does not mean that one had had no hand in creating the conditions creating the Nazis.

F: I recognize the distinction – silent here but understood – between the psychopaths and sociopaths actually directing the party apparatus, on the one hand, and the people who were drawn to them like moths to the flame.

CGJ: That distinction is always to be drawn, and you may regard it as a law of life that – other things being equal – sociopaths will rise to lead any organization. That America had its Marshalls and Eisenhowers was a providential exception to the rule, but it does not invalidate it. Naturally, certain kinds of organizational structures are more resistant to being taken over by sociopaths than others. Oddly enough – given your automatic assumptions – relatively rigid structures such as armies are more resistant to sociopaths than more fluid ones. Can you guess why?

F: My assumption would be that a rigid promotion-and-competence-based organization provides less scope to sociopaths because their peers and superiors know them too well.

CGJ: Another factor is that their scope of responsibility and opportunity is quite well defined, and deviations from what is expected are conspicuous. Also, imbued in career officers and men is a strong sense of institutional loyalty and loyalty to certain ideas. All of it makes life much less rewarding for sociopaths, who prefer to wheel and deal, as you would say; who prefer ambiguous structures; who prefer anonymity and evasion of responsibility, when useful

F: This explains something that has struck me for years – how honorable and decent the German Army was, top to bottom, compared to the SS and (while it lasted) the SA, and the backstabbing homicidal Nazi hierarchy itself.

CGJ: However, do not forget that that army executed whatever orders it was given, provided they seemed to be from a legal source. Also, after Hitler made his officers swear personal loyalty to him, he very astutely undermined their footing. Still, as you say, the German Army did not offer the scope to sociopaths that the SS and Nazi Party did. So, maybe you learned something here, connecting an observation you had made with an explanation you had not thought of.

F: Yes, I think so. It was Canaris and Beck and others who did what they could to make the Nazis lose, because they preferred to be traitors in name and even in fact to the leadership of their country than to the ideals that might be called the permanent, transcendent, country. And let’s take another break, perhaps until tomorrow.

  1. It is interesting that Jung seems to consider communism a mortal peril – in the real world trigger-happy toddlers killing by mistake are what is going on. An intellectual likes to see through the lense of battling ideologies. While the hoi polloi just figure out how to work the current ecosystem, whetever it is called. An ideology will never be able to cut life-force.

    The sociopaths and such: I have just been looking at the Puer Aeternus (von Franz) – the eternal child archetype. That is dealing with narcissism – less menacing than sociopaths and such, but clearly on the same spectrum. And I think I need to point out that Jesus is one puer aeternus himself: disrupting the traditional order, dying young, having a destiny that still seems to be able to hypnotize people into strange dream-like behaviour. A worshiping-following daze. One aspect of christianity that supports certain kind of leaders.

    The Puer Aeternus phenomenon arises when the old culture is turning old and lifeless, and needs renewal. A sort of an archetype of revolution: kicking out the old and bringing in something that is new. The smallest and least capable son/prince who slays the monster and brings the beautiful princess to the kingdom. The fairytales often have the brash princes go first to their destruction, and the lesser brother only gets a chance after the self-assured have gone to their destruction. So the fairytale has the sociopaths nicely dealt with.

    How to change from the old into the new? The French revolution set the tone for societal change. A truly blood-curdling tone. Goethe was originally for the revolution but after seeing what it led to, changed his mind. But we are still at the same place: how to keep society alive and fluid, capable of movement, instead of going into a deadened rigidity cemented with lies? That set-up is inherently unstable but have we had any occasions where that has been changed peacefully? The old king will only go when his head rolls down the stairs. And then all hell breaks loose. The next time consciousness kicks back, folks are sitting on a pile of corpses (and swearing never again).

    So, what to do? Would there be some way to break the hypnotic spell of the Pueri Aeternii? And this brings to my mind one definion of god: the concept is a container for human wrath (this is from Peter von Sloterdijk). As long as we have some emotional baggage, some unattended dreams or unattended garbage, we have to cling to some balancing force that will take care of what we ourselves don’t have the skill or will or whatever it takes to handle it. So, as long as we don’t do our own work, we will be looking for some savior. And societies that actively train their citizens to be sheeple, will always be unstable, bi-polar, either repressed/depressed or manic. Moving, but in a rigid/addicted pattern.

    And then there is the reality that Pueri Aeterni are the bringers of the new, the renewed life. It is something we have in ourselves, the creative part. How to bring that forth in a good way? In ourselves? That would be the true resolution of these wannabe-saviors that promise yet another round on the crushing wheel of us vs. them. That the sheeple lose interest in joining the us vs. them spectacle.

An intellectual likes to see through the lense of battling ideologies.” I think this embodies two mistakes. First, he isn’t talking about the situation today, but as it was in the twentieth century when communism had the support of the Russian state. More importantly, the peril was of an ideology allowing people to submerge themselves and their personal problems in a larger collective — which, in practice, means evasion of their true work and abandonment to some extent of their individuality. In this sense, Nazism and Communism were similar temptations.

      1. Ever read Bulgakovs’ Master and Margarita? A fabulous book in many, many ways. Also reveals how lies were already in the foundation of so-called communism. And for the experience of that social experiment, russians are probably the most resilient nation on earth. They really know how to take care of themselves, not expecting the state to do anything except collect taxes and harass them. But it seems the propaganda at some moment of time was so effective, that many really believed the ideology was running the society. And I completely agree, Stalin era soviet union was similar totalitarianism as germany during national socialist rule.

        Still have not figured out the refining of a text. Seems there is resistance, gotta look at what it is. As if intuition were a momentary thing, not open to revision – but that is just an assumption, could it be revised? Thank you for keepin’ on prodding! And I’ll have to start using some spell-checker, so many typos in my writing.
